My environmental story has a lengthy history of deep and sprawling roots and is grounded in a place that is similarly important to my mom and my grandfather’s connection to the earth — the Greek village of Kriopigi. Even though it hurts sometimes, I like things that force me to confront my own stories and experiences — especially those in relation to place and people. In “Mixed Roots & Branches,” I reflect upon what one place means to different people and how even my own story may be in conflict with the place and people I love most. Check out this journey through old Super 8mm film of my mother and grandfather, camcorder footage of my own childhood experience in the village and a stop-motion I made in my basement.
